CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Beruka
AGE: Canon never gives her an age but she's presumably in her late teens or early twenties.
CANON: Fire Emblem: Fates

CANON HISTORY:
CANON PERSONALITY:
Beruka believes that she's a cold, unfeeling assassin, devoid of any emotion. The truth is much more complicated than that, though it's a truth she hasn't yet realized herself. While she certainly is cold and stoic, there's much more to her than her surface traits would imply.

At a glance, Beruka seems to be stiff and unapproachable; she's quiet and only speaks when spoken to, she's cold and brusque in her manner of speech even when someone does approach her, and she never has very much to say. She's socially awkward too, having no problems telling people about her awful past even when she probably shouldn't be saying things like that. Beruka is a mess in part because of her background - she was abandoned by her parents and raised by an assassin, forced to kill to survive before she was even ten years old. Her job has ultimately shaped her into the awkward, cold person she is now, but that's not all there is to her personality.

Beruka is exceptionally loyal to the people that have earned her trust. It's not easy to earn her trust, but once you have, you've got someone who will gladly kill for you. Beruka's loyalties lie with Camilla, one of the princesses of Nohr. While she says that she'd be willing to kill Camilla if the pay was better, Beruka would only leave Camilla's side if she trusted her potential new employer more than she trusts Camilla. That's not going to happen, according to her supports with Camilla. Beruka's very fond of Camilla and will gladly follow her orders, regardless of what they are. It's why she agrees to fight with Corrin's army in the Revelation route of the game, after all.

That brings up another problem, though; Beruka is completely aimless without orders. She doesn't see the point in hobbies or talking to people without reason, but she knows better than to overwork herself as well, which leaves her with downtime where she doesn't do anything. When left to her own devices, Beruka will usually pick up more contracts to kill people or she'll pursue leads to make sure no one's out for Camilla's blood, but overall she's so dedicated to her mission that she doesn't know what to do with herself when she has spare time. She tells Kaze in their support that she doesn't see the point in hobbies and while she can certainly learn to relax, it takes quite a bit of doing.

Her dedication to her job can be admirable, however. Beruka's shown to be exceptionally skilled at assassinations in her supports and she claims the only job she ever failed was the one where Camilla hired her. Once Beruka has taken on a contract, she will complete it, regardless of the circumstances. She killed her own mentor because of a contract, after all. On the other hand, she won't take a contract if she feels she can't trust the person who gave it to her, as seen in her support with Xander. Trust is an important aspect of Beruka's personality.

Which leads to another point: Beruka is perhaps surprisingly naive. As revealed in her support with Charlotte, she falls completely for Charlotte's claims that a nice, homemade lunch can help you seize a man's heart (Beruka takes this very literally) and it's only when she tells Camilla this that she realizes she's been tricked. Beruka may have grown up fast, but she's still learning about the world around her and she can be tricked by people she trusts.

While Beruka claims that she doesn't have emotions, she very obviously does. In her supports with Odin she shows that she's capable of getting angry and she shows mild levels of irritation in most of her other supports. She has little patience for Keaton's antics, for example. Beruka doesn't seem aware that she can feel these things, most likely because she's always been like this and has never truly realized that anger is an emotion. Once again, she's kind of naive.

Anger isn't the only emotion Beruka feels, however. Deep down she really does want to be loved, as revealed in many of her S-supports. She wants to return that love as well and by the time she's reached an S-support with someone, chances are she's already feeling it. While she'll never be the most demonstrative person with her emotions, Beruka is certainly capable of feeling and by the end of her support chains, she wants to feel more.

Beruka always puts others before herself. While this is obvious with Camilla and how Beruka serves her, this is true in almost all of her support conversations. Beruka won't do something just for someone else's happiness, but she does care about the well-being of her allies (primarily because if they weren't in top fighting condition, they could potentially get Camilla killed). She can be surprisingly kind after she warms up to someone, though it takes a lot to get to that point. Likewise, she's never pointlessly cruel and Beruka is by no means sadistic. She kills, but she doesn't take any pleasure in killing. She only does it because it's her job and it's what she knows best. Not that this makes any of this right, but Beruka had also never been told right from wrong before her supports with Arthur, which is why she takes interest in hearing him speak about justice. Beruka's ultimately a simple girl who kills because it's what she's best at and it pays the bills.

One of her greatest fears is that she'll stay exactly the way she is, unable to feel anything. Beruka seeks help from Odin, believing that a spell might be the only way for her to feel things. Outside of this example, she doesn't really try to change her inability to feel things, though many member of the army offer to help her, even going so far as to say they'll do whatever it takes, even if it takes years. Silas is an extreme example, but the people she's around certainly do try to help Beruka, which really does work to her advantage. When she's around people like this she really is capable of feeling things, she just hasn't fully realized it.

While she comes off as cold and uncaring, Beruka is a loyal subordinate and ally. She takes her time warming up to people, but she's certainly capable of it. In the end, she's a woman shaped by her unfortunate circumstances who is working on embracing her human nature and learning how to feel.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Beruka is a Wyvern Rider, a class that fights from the back of a dragon. The class uses axes and when promoted, can use either tomes or lances as well. Her other base job, Fighter, would allow her access to swords if she promoted to Hero. Fighters use axes as well, though they sacrifice accuracy for a higher critical hit chance. Beruka is also capable of taking on a third job if she has an A+ rank with another female member of the army and a fourth job if she has an S-rank with a male.

She has two starting skills: Strength +2 raises her attack power and Opportunist (her personal skill) allows her to deal more damage to enemies who cannot counterattack. Over time she gains other skills such as Lunge (allows her to trade places with the unit she just attacked). I can go into more detail on the skills from her promoted classes if you'd like! As a unit, Beruka tends to lean more towards strength and defense, with a much lower magic resistance. As a Wyvern Rider, Beruka does have to be wary of Archers, who can take out her mount easily.

Her abilities don't end there, however. Beruka is said to be the best assassin in Nohr, though the game never goes into too much detail about how she kills people. Presumably poison is involved in at least some assassinations given that she knows enough about it to know what will and won't kill a person. She's also the most immune to poison, which probably has something to do with how she knows what won't kill a person. As an assassin, Beruka is very good at stealth operations - during her support with Niles he loses track of her which is said to be difficult to do. Beruka claims there is only one time she wasn't able to complete her job and that was when Camilla hired her.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Brooke Avery
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
Brooke's hair is light brown instead of blue, but she dislikes the color so she usually dyes it. It's currently hot pink, but she's had it as almost every color in the rainbow at one point or another. Like her canon self, she tends to stick to wearing dark clothes. She doesn't have Beruka's muscle mass from swinging an axe around either, so she's on the tiny side at 5'2".

AU HISTORY:
★ Born and raised in the middle of nowhere, Brooke spent most of her early childhood befriending the neighborhood boys and roughhousing. She has an older brother and a younger brother who absolutely encouraged play fighting (and sometimes actual fighting).
★ Despite this, Brooke was always a level-headed kid. She didn't pick fights and she didn't make trouble, though she was often roped into her friends' shenanigans and that would end up with her in the principal's office. (Her parents tried to encourage her to make other friends, but this was the one thing she was stubborn about.)
★ Her parents didn't get along and spent most of her early childhood fighting. Brooke learned to stay quiet and out of the way during these fights and by the time she was ten, she'd gotten very good at hiding away until the fighting was over. Her mother left her father around the same time.
★ Her parents always fought about money and after her mom left, things got worse. Brooke never went hungry, but her father was barely keeping them afloat while working two jobs. He wasn't around very much and became distant as a result.
★ Brooke's clothes were never very nice and some of the girls in school did tease her for it. It's why she still preferred hanging out with guys, because they weren't as quick to judge her (and she could get her clothes dirty with them without anyone caring).
★ Despite this, Brooke did pretty well in school, though her interests were mostly in gym. She eventually picked up extracurriculars in the form of the gymnastics and track team as well as photography, of all things. She doesn't fancy herself an artist, but she likes taking pictures, mostly of nature.
★ Brooke mostly let other people lead her around. She's pretty laid-back and goes with the flow, which meant she got dragged into all sorts of things. Sometimes they got in trouble, other times they just got obsessed with something for awhile. One of these obsessions was parkour, which Brooke happened to be really good at. She still does it sometimes and her friends film her. She's not famous for it or anything, but there are some pretty impressive .gifs of her floating around out there.
★ During her first year of high school her father ended up getting a new, higher paying job in Recollé so her family moved. Brooke ended up having very few friends during high school because she withdrew. She was angry at having her life uprooted but instead of talking about it like a normal person, Brooke bottled it up and didn't say anything to anyone.
★ She eventually graduated and got a scholarship to Recollé University, which she loved. She eventually got over herself and started making friends with the people in university.
★ Brooke majored in business with the hopes of one day opening up her own bar.
★ Currently she works as a bartender, working for Darius Chase ([personal profile] ossifragant, with permission of course). She really loves her job and is in no rush to actually open her own business. She claims that's still what she wants to do, but deep down she really isn't sure. She's not exactly a leader and she knows it. Maybe she'll just stay like this for a little while longer...

AU PERSONALITY:
The biggest difference between Beruka and Brooke is that Brooke doesn't believe she's emotionless. She doesn't have stunted emotions in quite the same way Beruka does, mostly thanks to the fact that she was raised in a loving family. Times were tough, sure, but she never had to kill to make ends meet. Brooke does experience a wide range of emotions, though she's very subdued in what she shows. This is because of how her parents fought when she was a child and how she felt like she was getting in the way if she expressed fear or anger at the situation. So while Brooke does hide her emotions, she certainly does feel things.

Another big change is loyalty and devotion. Brooke doesn't have anyone in her life she's fanatically devoted to, whether because of a job or otherwise. Her loyalties are to her friends, but unlike Beruka she'd never think of betraying them for money or because of a contract. Part of that is due to a different upbringing and part of that is due to societal influence. Brooke comes across as normal, even if she is a little socially stunted at times. Brooke and Beruka do have one thing in common though: neither of them know what to do when they aren't working. Brooke's is born from constantly working her butt off to get a scholarship and then to graduate, however.

Brooke also likes people much more than Beruka ever did. She enjoys her job as a bartender, where she can listen to people chat about their problems without being expected to do anything (except pour drinks). She can sympathize with people easier than Beruka ever could, but ultimately she does still keep most people at arm's length since she has trouble getting close to people. The people she's already close to have earned her loyalty and friendship, of course. Brooke is generally a lot kinder than Beruka, mostly because she knows how to show kindness without making it seem like it's all about duty and the mission.

Lastly, Brooke isn't a take-charge kind of person. While Beruka was subservient to her mistress, she still took matters into her own hands more often than not. She chose which contracts to take and which ones to discard. Brooke is much more laid-back, both in terms of personality and how she goes about things in her life. She isn't as uptight of a person in general and knows how to have fun, but more importantly, she lets others lead her around. While she claims she wants to run her own bar, the truth is that she likes letting others make all the big decisions and tell her what to do. It's easier just to follow orders, in her opinion.

She certainly doesn't have the makings to suddenly become an assassin, but that's changed Brooke for the better. She doesn't have any problems feeling things and while she does bottle her emotions up, she at least has enough of them to never have to worry like Beruka did. Brooke isn't really a complicated person, but then again, neither was Beruka.

SAMPLE
Beruka at the TDM, but since none of these are long enough, here's a written sample.

Brooke glances at the clock - fifteen minutes until she needs to leave for work. That's not enough time to get anything done around the apartment, so reluctantly sighs and pulls out her phone. She's got a few games she can play; maybe that will help time pass quicker.

(Sure, she could go into work early, but she can't clock in until the usual time and it's not like she really wants to be around some of the already-drunk patrons.)

So Brooke opens up her phone, fully planning on playing a game, but something else catches her eye. There's a new app she doesn't remember downloading. "Retrospec?" She asks aloud and frowns. "Probably some kind of virus. I'll just delete it."

Except the app doesn't delete when she tries it, and Brooke's eyes narrow in frustration. After several minutes of trying everything she can think of (without opening the probably-a-virus program) she sighs loudly.

"I guess I'm due for a new phone sometime soon anyway. I'll just have to get this looked at tomorrow." And see about new phone prices. That's going to be ugly, but as usual, she doesn't seem all that upset by it. Any anger she has toward the app is repressed as usual, because Brooke can't afford to get mad right before work.

She heads out to Darius's bar, Providence, and checks in before taking her usual place at the bar. Thoughts about the stupid virus are far from her mind as she settles in, keeping a professional air about her as she serves drinks and listens to her patrons' woes. Brooke's never really minded this sort of thing; she's just glad there's a counter separating her from the sappier drunks.

One of her patrons asks her when she's going to open her own bar and Brooke stumbles over her words a bit, "Um, well... You see..." She bites her lip for a moment before continuing, "a lot of work goes into running a place like this. I just don't have the money for it yet." A good enough excuse, the patron certainly won't question it. It's true too; she does have money saved up, but not nearly enough to open a bar.

Still, is that really the real reason? It's not just because she doesn't have the money for it, is it? She knows better than to believe that, but she also doesn't want to think about it, so Brooke pours another drink and ignores that nagging thought in the back of her head. What if she doesn't want to move on from here?
